EGREMONT — How do small, rural towns build needed affordable housing?

A new duplex model may be the answer.

The Impact South County (formerly CDCSB) had a groundbreaking on Tuesday for its unique housing model that combines attainable homeownership and affordable renting. For smaller towns like Egremont, this model’s scale and expense are much more feasible than many other options for affordable housing.

The model works by selling the entire home to a middle-income family, which then rents the other unit to a low-income family, adding two attainable units to a town where the average home costs $891,000.
