The Thornewood is a workforce housing project located at 453 Stockbridge Road in Great Barrington, just north of downtown near the intersection with Route 183. Impact South County converted the former Thornewood Inn — a Dutch Colonial home built in 1919, sitting on a 2.5-acre lot and run as an inn by David and Terry Thorne since 1983 — into 16 furnished rooms (eventually expanding to 18) with private ensuite bathrooms, suitable for one to two adults. The units share a kitchen and common living/lounge spaces, with on-site laundry, ample parking, and access to a Berkshire Regional Transit Authority bus line.

The project is designed specifically as workforce housing, prioritizing applicants who live and work in Great Barrington, with eligibility also extended to those working elsewhere in Berkshire County, subject to income limits. Impact South County completed the purchase in December 2023 and opened the property with a soft opening in June 2024, repurposing existing inn space rather than building new — at roughly $85,000 per unit, a fraction of the $400,000–$500,000 typical cost of new affordable housing construction.

Most young people starting out in life don’t have a lot of money, so it’s nice to have affordable housing. Thornewood was my saving grace.”
